The Beginning – 1991

In January, hotelier and businessman Mr. Fritz Gubler, along with Mr. Max Player and Mr. Robert Wittingham founded Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School, the first school in Australia to offer an internationally recognised hotel management education in a live-in environment. Mr. Michael Stautmanis was the first Principal. BMIHMS' first intake of 84 students began in January, officially opened by NSW Premier, the Hon. Nick Greiner, on 13 May that year. Graduating students received two diplomas: one from the Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board (VETAB) and a Swiss diploma in Hotel Management from the International Hotel & Tourism Training Institute (IHTTI).


1994
BMIHMS was granted an Advanced Diploma status by VETAB

   
 

1995
BMIHMS partnered with the Taranaki Polytechnic to form the Pacific International Hotel Management School (PIHMS) in New Plymouth, New Zealand, and also partnered with IHTTI, Neuchatel, Switzerland and the Alpine Centre in Athens, Greece, to adopt a common undergraduate curriculum so students could transfer between all four schools during their studies.

BMIHMS registered as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in NSW.

1999
The BMIHMS Advanced Diploma program was extended to a three year Bachelor of Arts in International Hospitality and Tourism Management awarded by Bournemouth University, UK.

 
 

2000
April: BMIHMS welcomed a new Principal, Professor Peter A Jones, formerly Head of the School of Service Industries at Bournemouth University.

2001
October: BMIHMS and the University of New England (UNE) signed a five-year agreement for the delivery of courses towards a Bachelor of Commerce (Hospitality and Tourism Management) conferred by UNE.


BMIHMS established a Diploma level Hospitality Management course in conjunction with the China Tourism Management Institute (CTMI) in Tianjin, China. Partners and associates of the School at this time included culinary, hotel and tourism schools in China, South Africa, the Philippines, Sweden, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands.

 
 

2002
BMIHMS was accredited to introduce its own postgraduate program, a one-year Graduate Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Management and an 18-month Graduate Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management.


April: The tourism management strand of BMIHMS's undergraduate program was officially launched by the Federal Minister for Tourism and Small Business, the Hon. Joe Hockey MP.

2003
October: BMIHMS hosted its first Teaching and Learning Conference for its partner and associate schools around the world. BMIHMS became a founding member of the national peak body, the Association of Australian Hotel Schools, representing the leading private hotel and tourism schools in Australia.


November: BMIHMS won the Trans Tasman Trophy, a bi-annual Silver Service and Culinary Competition held between Australian and New Zealand Universities and Culinary Schools from Sweden, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands.

 
 

2004
January: BMIHMS and the Suzhou Tourism Schools in Suzhou, near Shanghai, commenced their partnership agreement to deliver a Diploma level Hospitality Management course on the Suzhou campus.


March: BMIHMS welcomed a new Principal Mr. Guy Bentley, formerly College Director of 3 Colleges of TAFE in the Western Sydney Institute with a strong background in vocational education and hospitality.


August: Mr. Bentley received a Platinum Award for outstanding achievement from Tourism Training Australia recognising his outstanding services to the industry as a leader in tourism and hospitality training.


November: BMIHMS became a founding member of the ORION global hotel schools alliance, a close family of like-minded elite schools that share academic resources, curriculum development, articulation arrangements and global market presence.

2005
January: BMIHMS commenced its English Language Program on campus delivered by specialist teachers from Academies Australia for students wishing to improve their language level to IELTS 5.5 for entry to the undergraduate program.


March: BMIHMS was the first private education provider in Australia to receive the international recognition as a quality educator by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO), an agency and forum of the United Nations.


August: BMIHMS received registration through the NSW Higher Education Directorate as a higher education institution. It also received accreditation for the Higher Education Diploma of Food and Beverage Management and a two-year Associate Degree in Hotel and Resort Management.


September: BMIHMS acquired the Australian International Hotel School (AIHS) in Canberra, becoming BMIHMS Pty Ltd. AIHS was founded in 1995 in close affiliation with the prestigious Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. Designed in 1924 by the Commonwealth's Chief Architect, John Smith Murdoch, who also designed Parliament House and the Hotel Canberra (now the Hyatt Hotel Canberra), the Hotel Kurrajong is a fine example of early Commonwealth architecture, influenced by the Prairie style of architects Frank Lloyd Wright and visionary planner of Canberra, Walter Burley Griffin.


October: BMIHMS Pty Ltd. was registered with the Department of Education, Employment, and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) formally known as the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) as a HEP (Higher Education Provider) enabling Australian student applicants to be eligible to apply for deferral of tuition fees through the Federal Government's FEE-HELP tuition fee loans scheme. The DEEWR granted accreditation to the BMIHMS Pty Ltd. Bachelor of Business (Hotel Management).


November: BMIHMS also attained accreditation for its two new courses from the Institute of Hospitality (IOH), formally known as the Hotel and Catering Institute Management Association (HCIMA), the only internationally recognised professional management association for managers in hospitality, leisure and tourism.

 
 

2006

AIHS joined the ORION global hotel schools alliance and took over delivery of the postgraduate program from BMIHMS in February 2006.


April: Tourism Training Australia presented Guy Bentley, CEO of BMIHMS Pty. Ltd., with the coveted National Training Legend award at the annual National Training Legends Awards in Sydney.


July: BMIHMS introduces the first of two new higher education awards: a one-year higher education Diploma of Food and Beverage Management and a two-year Associate Degree in Hotel and Resort Management.


October: BMIHMS hosted the ORION Conference and the ORION Congress which explored "How Generation Y will manage the future.” Hon. Morris Iemma, MP, Mr Bob Debus, MP for Blue Mountains, officially opened the BMIHMS's major refurbishment and extension of campus facilities including additional accommodation, new library, new student recreation area, fully refurbished fine dining room and new bar, new indoor-outdoor café and new front office and guest lounge. Following was a celebration for the 15th year operation with an exhibition of stories and journeys featuring the BMIHMS Alumni.


BMIHMS Pty Ltd. announced the commencement of a new strategic partnership with the Tourism School of the University of Queensland, the only other World Tourism Organisation (WTO) accredited educator in Australia. The University of Queensland quality endorsed the School's own Bachelor of Business degree.

2007
BMIHMS Pty Ltd. became a founding member of The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism & Hospitality Education (THE-ICE), which is an independent, not-for-profit organisation. The qualifications and programs of BMIHMS Pty Ltd. were reviewed by an independent panel of assessors to ensure that they met Standards of Excellence.


The BMIHMS Pty Ltd. instituted and trademarked the Graduate Privilege Partner Program (GPPP) facilitates graduate positions for top graduates with qualified world-renowned industry partners through an intensive recruitment and selection process.

 
 

2008
September: NSW Department of Education and Training accredited the present suite of Bachelor of Business awards offered by BMIHMS Pty Ltd. The ACT Accreditation & Registration Council accredited the present suite of awards offered by AIHS.

November: BMIHMS Pty Ltd. was bought by Laureate International Universities, to become a part of a global education network. Members are considered only if they bring to the network an established reputation for educational and academic excellence, a sensitivity to local culture and tradition, and a dedication to delivering the highest-quality, internationally minded education experience.

2009
BMIHMS Pty Ltd. successfully completed an audit by the Australian University Quality Agency (AUQA) as required by the Higher Education Support Act 2003.


January: BMIHMS Pty Ltd. commenced teaching 9 Bachelor of Business Awards through accreditation by NSW Department of Education and Training. The Leura degree is a Bachelor of Business in International Resort and Hotel Management and in Canberra, the Bachelor of Business in International Hotel Management, and Bachelor of Business in Event Management.


BMIHMS Pty Ltd. received accreditation from England's Institute of Hospitality (IOH), a non-governmental professional body for managers, and aspiring managers working in hospitality, Tourism and Leisure industry.


BMIHMS Pty Ltd. gained accreditation from the Hotellerie Suisse, the Swiss Hotel Association which awards a Swiss Hospitality diploma to all students who complete the Bachelor of Business. This is issued by Les Roches Bluche.

 
 

2010
February: BMIHMS won the 2009 National Qantas Australian Tourism Award for Tourism Education and Training.
